Get the Relief You Need With Windsor Family Dental

A root canal is one of the most common dental procedures, with over 14 million root canals performed every year. Root canals are required when the pulp at the center of your tooth is inflamed and/or infected. The pulp is a collection of blood vessels that supply your tooth with vital nutrients. When infected, you may experience:

  • Swollen gums around the infected tooth
  • Severe sensitivity to hot/cold
  • Pain when chewing

Infection can be caused by trauma to the tooth, deep decay, cracks, and chips. Regardless of how your pulp became infected, a root canal is the recommended treatment. Dr. Zhao is happy to discuss endodontic treatment options with you, and services can often be completed right here at Windsor Family Dental. She is fully equipped to treat your infected tooth and have you feeling better fast.

What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a restorative dental procedure aimed at treating inflamed or infected tooth pulp. During a root canal procedure, the dentist removes the infected pulp, cleans and disinfects the root canals, and seals the space to protect against future infections. Root canals are crucial for preserving the natural tooth, relieving discomfort and preventing further complications to the affected tooth.

The Root Canal Process

Root canals are performed to remove pulp tissue from the infected tooth. During a root canal treatment, Dr. Zhao will:

  1. Apply local anesthesia to eliminate discomfort
  2. Remove infected pulp from the center of your tooth
  3. Clean and seal the root canal with a permanent material

A root canal may require 2 visits depending on your specific situation. Success occurs in 90% of cases. If your tooth cannot be restored via endodontic treatment, you’ll be informed during the initial consultation and Dr. Zhao will discuss the other options available to you.

Signs You Need a Root Canal

  • Prolonged Tooth Pain: Persistent and severe tooth pain, especially when chewing or applying pressure.
  • Sensitivity to Hot or Cold: Heightened sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures that lingers even after the stimulus is removed.
  • Swollen or Tender Gums: Swelling or tenderness in the gums around a specific tooth.
  • Darkening or Discoloration: A change in tooth color, often appearing darker or discolored.
  • Pimple on the Gums: The presence of a pimple-like bump (dental abscess) on the gums near a tooth.
  • Lingering Pain After Dental Procedures: Continued pain or discomfort following dental work, such as a filling or crown placement.
  • Cracked or Chipped Tooth: A crack or chip in the tooth can expose the pulp to bacteria.
  • Radiating Pain: Pain that radiates from one tooth to other areas of the face, jaw, or neck.
  • Pulp Sensitivity: Sensitivity to touch or pressure on a specific tooth.
  • Pulpitis Diagnosis: Diagnosis by a dentist confirming inflammation or infection of the tooth's pulp.

After Your Root Canal

You’ll be able to drive home after your treatment and return to your normal routine. You should contact your dentist within a few weeks to crown your recently root canal-treated tooth. Although your root canal was necessary, having a root canal weakens the natural tooth structure causing the treated tooth to be more susceptible to fracture. A crown protects the root canal-treated tooth and helps to prevent such fractures.  It’s rare for endodontic patients to experience complications after routine treatment, but if any problems arise, contact our office. To prevent further decay, continue practicing good dental hygiene.

Is the root canal uncomfortable?

Most patients report discomfort during a root canal is equivalent to having a filling placed. Our restorative dentists use local anesthesia to numb the area and make every effort to ensure your comfort during the procedure.

What is the Cost of a Root Canal Treatment in Wisconsin?

The cost of a root canal is case-specific; molars have more canals than front teeth and therefore cost more to treat. In general, a root canal can range from $600-$2000 or more. I also had the pleasure of meeting Kristi, Dr. DeMatthew's assistant, who was friendly and personable. Dr. DeMatthew herself was articulate in explaining the details of my dental health, making sure I understood everything clearly. Overall, my experience at Windsor Family Dental was wonderful, and I highly recommend Dr. DeMatthew and her staff.
